The name Ian Rush, to many younger football fans, will not represent the presence of greatness. Unfortunately for Rushie, whilst at Leeds and Newcastle his pace and predatory eye for goal abandoned him. Having said this he did manage to keep his legendary hairstyle and moustache, which I’m sure is a special talent he will never lose.
If you forget the tail end of his career there is no doubt that Ian Rush was the DADDY when he was in his prime. His natural striking talent saw him score 380 career goals for Chester, Liverpool, Juventus, Leeds and Newcastle. He also had time to score another 24 goals in 74 full internationals for Wales.
The all time Liverpool goal scoring legend, with 337 goals, accumulated a huge amount of silverware throughout his time at Anfield. Five League championship, FA Cup and League Cup winners medals sit proudly on the Rushie’s mantle piece. They are joined by a European Cup winners medal, two footballer of the year awards and the European golden boot for the 32 league goals he scored back in 1984.
He is also some what of a record breaker, holding the record for the most goals scored in the FA Cup, FA Cup finals and Merseyside derbies. Finally, he also shares the League Cup scoring record with another great striker Geoff Hurst.
Ian Rush MBE, who now runs his own finishing school for strikers, is without a doubt one of the best centre-forwards the football league has ever seen. The young pretenders to his Liverpool throne still have far to go in their quest to match the Daddy.
